Bending the Total Eclipse With James Akers + Kacie Lees
On April 8, 2024 a total solar eclipse rips across the North American sky, blacking out the daylight and freaking out all the bugs and animals. For a short period of time the Sun’s super-hot, flickering edges become visible to the naked eye and light shifts purple. People say experiencing the total eclipse is life changing, reverent.
Inspired by the transformative power of light and the upcoming total solar eclipse, this two-day neon bending workshop will introduce students to the craft of bending neon glass over flame and illuminating our hand-formed shapes with electric current. Join avant garde neon instructors, Kacie Lees and James Akers to bend circles and curves representative of this impending phenomena. Participants can expect to leave with two units (1 circle + 1 arc).
2 Sessions: March 30 — March 31
Saturday, 11:00 am - 5:00 pm + Sunday, 11:00am - 5:00pm
Mirror Party with James Akers and Kacie Lees
Join James Akers and Kacie Lees to turn glass into mirror! In this 3-hour workshop, participants will learn the basics of coating flat and blown glass forms with our two-part mirroring chemical solution mixed by instructors. BYOGlass, no glass will be supplied for this event. After mirroring and sealing our creations, the party continues with pizza and discussion in the classroom. New to mirroring? New to glass? All are welcome!

Enter the Void: A Spiral Bending Neon Workshop (Copy)
Petroglyphs, hypnotism, Fibonacci, nirvana, galaxies, vitality, the sun, higher consciousness, Spiral Jetty, birth, expansion, vortex, void. Occurring in nature as well as in the Electric Lab at the Museum of Neon Art this November, spirals symbolize transformation and the constant flux of our changing world. In this 5-hour beginner's workshop, we will review historic representations of spirals and jump in the flame to bend our very own whorling shapes.

MIRRORWORLD: Imperfect Practices in Neon & Reflection with James Akers and Kacie Lees
In this 3-session neon and mirror-making weekend intensive, participants will learn the basics of coating sheets of glass with silver nitrate to make unique mirrors, then enjoy time in the flames to bend simple, freeform shapes in neon to pair with our mirrored glass. Highlighting the inherent and imperfect nature of the human hand, we will draw inspiration from Rorschach, Chryssa, and Nacarro, discuss philosophies of reflection and look at contemporary and historic works of art that combine mirrored forms with electric light.
This class meets Friday, October 27th 6-9pm and Saturday, October 28th & Sunday, October 29th, 11am-6pm both days
Heart Beam: A Neon Heart Bending Workshop
Learn the basics of bending neon signs while making a luminous heart with assistance from interdisciplinary artist and professor, Kacie Lees. In this five-hour immersive workshop, participants will work with a heart-shaped bending pattern and follow along with a step-by-step illustrated guide to turn hollow glass tubes into radiant neon hearts.
Lunar Light: A Full Moon Making Workshop
Bend the simple – yet oh, so complex – shape of a circle (with assistance from instructor Kacie Lees) and then watch your neon moon come to life. Students will follow along with an illustrated guide (which visually breaks down each step in the bending process into key moves), work with a bending pattern, and get in the fire to form a unique piece.
Love, Lust, Neon
Fall in love with neon. Bend your own heart shaped neon piece with assistance from instructor Kacie Lees. Students will follow along with a pattern and illustrated guide, to bend an 8” heart shape in glass. Then we will watch as our hearts comes to life on the bombarding table!
Splices: Color Affect + Thin Rothkos with Kacie Lees
Can you feel color? In this beginners workshop led by Kacie Lees, we will focus on the technique of splicing neon tubes together and talk about how color affects our environments, our bodies, and our minds. Splices [aka seals] are a foundational technique in neon fabrication. From Laddie John Dill to Mark Rothko, we will discuss the vibrational powers of color pairings and paint our moods in light.
What to expect: Participants can expect to leave with 1-2 spliced units containing 2-4 colors each. Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page.
How to Bend Infinity with Kacie Lees
In this 5-hour advanced workshop, participants will bend glass tubing into the endless shape of infinity ♾. Prior to getting in the flame and embedding unique imprints on our personal infinities, we will familiarize ourselves with infinity lore and survey artworks influenced by the endless form. Each participant will leave with an illuminated infinity symbol formed by their very own hands.
Two Days in space with kacie lees
In this 2-day beginner workshop, participants will source inspiration from the cosmos to bend freeform shapes in glass. From spiral galaxies to nebulas and orbs, participants can expect to leave with three units to complete their very own spacescapes.
Experimental Shapes
Experience the entire process of bending neon, from glass to glow with Neon Artist and author Kacie Lees! Get into the soft flame of the ribbon fire to make your own neon gesture. Each student will head home with their own handmade experimental work.
